The latest of my illustration work. I had a lot of fun with these! With the animals, because: animals, and with the non-living cycles (gas, rock, water) because I got to research some rad things.
It’s kinda funny, I’ve always wondered what it’d like to be a science textbook illustrator, and here I am, doing it! Wow. It’s such a weird thought!

I have this weird idea that in order for art to look good it needs to be cleaned up and polished… despite the fact that I LOVE rough sketches and quick gestures. So goodbye line-art, hello semi-cleaned up rough sketches. But I’m still not getting along with color though. What do you think? Try a color version anyway?
This was a surprise gift from my friend and classmate Mary Sauer, re-discovered during the move.
It is oil paint on paper vellum, and I’ve included a scan of the back of the painting to show how thin the vellum is. She favored painting with oil on paper vellum (taped to a board during painting), or sheets of plastic house siding that she first sanded with a power sander to make the surface textured to better hold the paint. Both techniques made her art extremely light, flexible and transportable, I don’t know why more of us didn’t catch on.
This was a painting she did her last year in the illustration department. I don’t know when it happened, but in her last year or two in the program she just exploded with skill. This was just a quick warm-up painting, and it’s still stunning in it’s craftsmanship. I’m glad to see that there are a lot of photos and scans of her work on her Facebook page, please take a look.

I’m kind of “eh” on the polar bear, but I’m really happy with the penguins and the reindeer. And why is it that everything looked like junk until I put the pencil lines on? Art mysteries!

I feel like this one is almost there! I’m a little burnt out from looking at it for so long though, so any opinions from fresh eyes would be greatly beneficial!

I’m actually really happy with this, I hammered the lines out in like, three hours of totally fatigued work, and then finished it when I woke up. KING HOW DOES YOUR BUTT WORK IDK Wow his hair totally makes him look another foot taller; technically Ace is the tallest one in this picture.
